Jameh Mosque of Bandar Abbas

The main congregational mosque of Bandar Abbas, with an ornate tiled facade

The Jameh Mosque is the main Friday mosque of Bandar Abbas, located in the older part of the city near the bazaar. Its tiled facade in blue and turquoise is the most visually striking piece of architecture in the city centre, and the interior courtyard offers a cool retreat from the heat of the street. The mosque follows the Sunni tradition, reflecting Bandar Abbas's Arab and Baluchi population — the city sits in a zone where Sunni Islam is more common than in much of the predominantly Shia Iranian interior.

Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome outside prayer times. Modest dress is required — for women, a headscarf and loose clothing; for men, long trousers. The mosque is most atmospheric on Friday mornings when the main weekly prayers bring the community together.
