Imam Khomeini Square

The main square of central Kermanshah is the busiest public space in the city, surrounded by banks, shops, and the edges of the bazaar. The square is not especially beautiful by Iranian standards — the Qajar-era buildings have largely been replaced by functional modern constructions — but it is the natural starting point for exploring the old city on foot.

The Jame' Mosque (Chehelsotoon Mosque), a few minutes' walk away, is the most historically significant religious building in the centre. The current structure is mainly Safavid with later additions, but the site has been a place of worship since at least the early Islamic period. The minaret offers a good view over the old quarter on days when it is open to climb.
