Things to Do

Mahdishar's main draws are natural and cultural rather than built heritage. The Darband Cave is the headline sight — a vast limestone cavern that doubles as an archaeological record of the region's past. The Parvar Protected Area to the north offers wildlife watching on the edge of the Alborz, while the mountain town of Shahmirzad, a few kilometres up the road, is a pleasant destination in its own right. The Sangesar nomadic tradition — horseback travel, black tents, hand-woven textiles — gives the whole area a living ethnographic dimension that few small Iranian cities can match.
