Jameh Mosque of Tabriz

Tabriz's congregational Friday mosque, incorporated into the Grand Bazaar

The Jameh Mosque is the historic Friday mosque of Tabriz and is structurally part of the Grand Bazaar complex — many visitors pass it on the way through without realising what it is. The building dates from the Seljuk period in its earliest form and has been rebuilt several times after earthquakes, most thoroughly during the Safavid and Qajar eras.

The brick prayer hall is sober and beautifully proportioned, lit only by openings in the dome. The mihrab is intricately carved and the wooden minbar is a fine example of late Safavid craftsmanship. Slip in for ten minutes between bazaar visits — it's a quiet counterpoint to the noise outside.
