Rob-e Rashidi

Ruins of a medieval scholarly and charitable complex on the edge of Tabriz

Rob-e Rashidi is the ruined site of a remarkable 14th-century complex founded by Rashid al-Din Hamadani, the Ilkhanid vizier, historian, and physician. It was conceived as a learned quarter with schools, a library, workshops, and charitable institutions: closer to a planned academic city than a single monument.

The surviving remains are fragmentary, so this is a place for travellers who enjoy history more than polished presentation. Its importance lies in what once stood here and in what it says about Tabriz under the Mongol successor states. Go with a map, patience, and realistic expectations.
