The Shohada Mosque ("Mosque of the Martyrs") stands on Shohada Square in the city centre and serves as one of Tabriz's most important active places of worship. The building is relatively modern but the dome and minarets follow traditional Persian patterns and are a familiar element of the skyline.
The square in front of the mosque is a major gathering point during religious holidays, particularly Muharram, when processions converge here. As a working mosque, dress modestly and behave respectfully if you go inside — non-Muslim visitors are generally welcomed.
