Sami Abdulrahman Park

Sprawling urban park in western Erbil — the city's most popular gathering place

Sami Abdulrahman Park covers around 200 hectares in the western part of Erbil and is the largest urban park in the city — a place that feels genuinely important to daily Kurdish life rather than a tourist attraction. In the evenings, particularly around sunset, families spread out across the grass, vendors sell corn and sunflower seeds, and the cafes along the park edges fill with young people. It is one of the best places in Erbil to observe the city as it actually lives.

The park is named for a senior KDP official killed in a suicide bombing in 2004. It has lakes with fountains, walking paths, children's play areas, and open lawns. The atmosphere is relaxed and secular by the standards of a city in Iraq. Bring some time and a willingness to sit — the park is not a place to rush through.
