Small hilltop shrine where Husayn's sister Zaynab is said to have watched the battle

Tucked behind the Husayn shrine complex, this modest mound and small mosque mark the spot where Zaynab bint Ali — Husayn's sister and one of the heroines of the Karbala story — is said to have stood watching as her brother and his companions were killed. From here she went on to be taken captive to Damascus, where her speeches in the court of the caliph Yazid helped shape the memory of the battle.

The site is much quieter than the main shrines, and a brief detour here gives you a calmer space to read up on the story. The view across the rooftops to the two golden domes is also striking, especially at sunrise.
