David's Waterfall

David's Waterfall is the main destination in Wadi David, an easy one-hour walk from the reserve entrance. The trail follows the wadi stream — a remarkable thing in a desert landscape — past pools where you can sometimes see fresh fish, under overhanging walls bright with maidenhair fern and wild iris, and up to the cascade itself. The fall drops about 20 metres into a pool surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Swimming in the pool was historically permitted but is now often restricted to protect the ecosystem — check the current rules at the entrance. Even without swimming, the walk is refreshing and the contrast with the parched hillsides above is dramatic. Come early; by late morning the trail can be crowded and hot.

A story
The waterfall is the tallest in the Judean Desert. The spring that feeds it flows year-round even in the driest years — it has been doing so for at least 10,000 years — making Ein Gedi a permanent oasis in a landscape that receives almost no rain.
