Wadi Arugot

Wadi Arugot is the second of Ein Gedi's two main wadis, reached from a separate entrance gate about a kilometre south of the Wadi David entrance. The trail is longer and somewhat harder than the Wadi David route — the upper waterfall is about 3.5 km from the gate — but it sees fewer visitors and the canyon is narrower and more dramatic.

The lower sections of the wadi are green and shaded, with the stream flowing through boulders and small pools. The upper waterfall drops into a dark canyon that is cool even in summer. Allow three to four hours for the full return walk. Combining both wadis in a single day is possible for fit walkers with an early start, but the heat makes it demanding in summer.

A story
The name Arugot means "flower beds" in Hebrew — a reference to the ancient cultivation terraces that once lined the wadi walls, where balsam and other aromatics were grown during the Roman period. The terraces are still faintly visible.
