Nachlaot is a tangle of narrow alleys, hidden courtyards, and tiny synagogues just west of Mahane Yehuda market, offering old-Jerusalem atmosphere without the Old City's intensity. Originally built as a series of small residential compounds in the late 19th century, each with its own courtyard and character, the neighbourhood has retained that intimate, village-like scale even as it's become one of the city's most desirable addresses. Wander and you'll stumble on vine-covered passageways, mosaic-decorated walls, and cats lounging on stone steps. An emerging foodie scene has brought small restaurants and bakeries into the lanes, and its proximity to the Shuk means excellent produce is always steps away. The neighbourhood is also a center of Jerusalem's alternative spiritual scene, with meditation groups and unconventional prayer gatherings. Nachlaot rewards those who simply get lost in it.
