Fukui Castle

Fukui Castle was built in the early 1600s for Yuki Hideyasu, son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The buildings are gone and the prefectural offices now occupy the old inner grounds, but the stone walls and moat still give the centre of Fukui its best historical frame.

It is a quick, easy stop from Fukui Station. Walk the outside of the moat and look for the old well, Fuku-no-i, whose name is tied to the city's name.
