Tsumago-juku Preservation Area

Preserved Edo-period post-town street where Tsumago's old Nakasendo character is strongest.

The preserved main street is the reason to come to Tsumago. Wooden inns, merchant houses, water channels, stone paving, and restrained shopfronts keep the old Nakasendo atmosphere unusually intact. The village is small, but it rewards slow walking: side lanes, eaves, shutters, and little changes in the road tell as much of the story as the named museums.

Tsumago was protected early, before rural preservation became fashionable in Japan. Residents agreed not to sell, rent, or destroy the old houses, which is why the street still feels coherent rather than patched together for visitors.
