Old Shizutani School

Seventeenth-century school for commoners, with stone walls, tiled roofs, and a calm wooded setting.

Old Shizutani School was founded in the Edo period as a place of learning for commoners, which still feels quietly radical. The stone walls, dark tiled roofs, lecture hall, and Confucian shrine are beautifully restrained, especially in autumn when the trees turn around the schoolyard.
