Hagi Reverberatory Furnace

Stone remains of an experimental 1850s furnace built as Choshu tried to copy Western cannon technology.

The Hagi Reverberatory Furnace is not visually grand, but it is historically sharp. Its twin stone chimneys are the remains of an 1850s Choshu experiment in Western-style iron technology, part of the hurried military learning that preceded the Meiji Restoration.
