Shokasonjuku Academy and Shoin Shrine

Preserved private school of Yoshida Shoin, whose students became major figures in Meiji Japan.

Shokasonjuku was the small private academy where Yoshida Shoin taught young Choshu students who would later help build modern Japan. Shoin himself was executed before the Meiji Restoration, but his ideas and students turned this modest school into one of Hagi's most important places.

The academy is preserved within Shoin Shrine, so the visit mixes political history, shrine grounds, and a strong sense of how local education became national change. It is the one Hagi stop you should not skip.
