The Tottori Sand Dunes are the reason most travellers come. Wind pushes the sand into long ridges and steep bowls above the Sea of Japan, creating a landscape that feels out of place in green, humid Honshu.
Go early or near sunset if you can. The light is better, the sand is cooler, and the sea views from the higher ridges make the climb feel worthwhile.
