Kurazukuri Street and Toki no Kane

Kawagoe's preserved merchant street, watched over by the Edo-style bell tower

The Kurazukuri district is Kawagoe's main reason to visit: a run of fireproof clay-walled merchant houses built after a major 1893 fire, with thick black plaster, tiled roofs, and shop fronts that still feel tied to the old Edo trade routes. The buildings are now cafes, sweet shops, craft stores, and small museums, but the street keeps enough weight and texture to avoid feeling like a set.

Toki no Kane, the time bell tower, stands just off the main street. The present tower dates from the late 19th century and still chimes several times a day. It is small by castle-town standards, but it gives Kawagoe its most recognisable skyline.
