Daigaku-dori

Kunitachi's defining feature is Daigaku-dori — "University Street" — a perfectly straight boulevard that runs due south from Kunitachi Station to the gates of Hitotsubashi University. Both pavements are lined with double rows of zelkova trees, their canopies meeting overhead to form a shaded tunnel of green in summer and a vivid corridor of gold and red in autumn. The street was designed as part of the town's original 1920s planning scheme and has been carefully preserved ever since, giving Kunitachi a parklike spaciousness rare in the Tokyo suburbs.

The boulevard is also well-stocked with independent bookshops, music stores, small bakeries, and quiet cafes — a reflection of the university-town demographic that has shaped the area for a century. Walking its full length, roughly one kilometre from station to campus, takes about fifteen minutes at a relaxed pace, though most visitors spend considerably longer stopping at the shops and benches along the way.

There are few streets in Greater Tokyo that reward simple walking as well as Daigaku-dori. Come in summer for the shade, in October for the turning leaves, or — most famously — in late March for the cherry blossoms.
