Kusatsu Shirane is the active volcanic mountain above Kusatsu, known for its pale, mineral-rich crater lakes and raw highland scenery. The emerald water of Yugama crater is the classic view when access is permitted.
Volcanic activity can close roads and trails with little warning, so check local conditions before setting out. When open, the mountain gives Kusatsu a dramatic counterpoint to the hot-spring town below.
