Mount Akagi is the reason Maebashi feels like more than another flat Kanto city. The old volcano rises northeast of town, with roads climbing to Lake Onuma, walking routes, summer flowers, autumn colour, and Akagi Shrine standing by the water.
It is a different day out from the city centre: cooler, greener, and much more spacious. Public transport is possible but limited, so check buses carefully or go by car if you want to move around the mountain rather than just make a short visit.
