Saimyoji Temple sits in the hills southeast of Mashiko's pottery centre. Its main hall, gate, and three-storey pagoda give the town a different register after the kilns and shops: older, greener, and more contemplative. It is worth the taxi or uphill detour if you want more than ceramics from a Mashiko day.
