Eikokuji

'Ghost Temple' known for a grim hanging scroll and its Seinan War connection.

Eikokuji is better known as the Ghost Temple. Its famous hanging scroll shows a grim ghost, tied to a local story about an apparition at the pond behind the temple.

The temple also has a more grounded historical note: Saigo Takamori used it as a main camp during the Seinan War. Between the story, the pond, and the war connection, it is one of Hitoyoshi's most memorable small sights.

A story
Eikokuji's ghost story centres on a hanging scroll painted by the temple's founder, the priest Jittei. According to the tale, a ghost appeared by the pond at night until Jittei showed it the ugly image he had painted; after that, it stopped appearing.
