Hitoyoshi

Kumamoto hot-spring river town known for castle ruins, ghost stories, shochu, and sweetfish.

Hitoyoshi sits in southern Kumamoto Prefecture on the Kuma River, a small hot-spring city with more personality than its size suggests. River fog, ayu sweetfish, kuma shochu, castle walls, and old temples give it a clear identity.

The town works well as a relaxed overnight or a full day from Kumamoto or Kagoshima. Start at the Hitoyoshi Castle ruins, then cross to Eikokuji, the so-called Ghost Temple. The Hitoyoshi hot springs make the practical reason to stay, while the Kuma River cruise and Hitoyoshi Craft Park Ishino Koen fill out the day.

Hitoyoshi is not a headline city, and that is part of its appeal. It feels local, river-bound, and old-fashioned in a way that rewards travellers already moving through southern Kyushu.
