Omi Shrine

Ocean-edge Shinto shrine on wave-shaped rocks, nicknamed the Ise of Miyazaki.

Omi Shrine is not large, but it has one of Hyuga's best settings. The buildings sit above rough volcanic rocks with the Pacific just beyond, so the visit feels half shrine, half coastal viewpoint.

Look for the boulders and the small cave shrine below the main grounds, but take the steep steps carefully. It is an easy add-on to Isegahama beach and the Cape Hyuga viewpoints.

A story
Omi Shrine is associated with Amaterasu, the sun goddess, which fits a coast once called Hinata, or "facing the sun". The shrine grounds are also known for sazare-ishi stones, the kind of fused pebbles named in Japan's national anthem.
