Hyuga sits on the Pacific side of northern Miyazaki, where Kyushu's coast turns rocky, green, and wave-beaten. The city is spread out, but it has a clear reason to stop: surfing beaches south of town, old port streets at Mimitsu, and the black-columned cliffs of Cape Hyuga.
The coast is the main act. Umagase gives the best look at the Cape Hyuga cliffs, while Kurusu no Umi turns the same basalt coast into a neat bit of local folklore. Nearby Omi Shrine is small, but its setting over the sea makes it feel much larger.
Hyuga works best as a day from Miyazaki or Nobeoka if you have a car. Add Okuragahama for surf and a long white beach, then go south to Mimitsu Historic District for wooden houses and the quieter memory of a port that once mattered.
