The Matsumoto Seicho Memorial Museum in the castle park commemorates Kokura's most famous literary son — the crime novelist who sold over 500 million books in Japan and is still widely read today. The museum covers his life, working methods, manuscripts, and the social themes he explored in his fiction, which often focused on corruption, class, and the dark side of postwar Japan's rapid economic growth.
For non-Japanese readers, Seicho is less well known than he deserves — translations exist and are increasingly available. The museum is well designed and gives good context even without Japanese. It sits right next to Kokura Castle, making it a natural addition to the same visit.
