The Kitakyushu Innovation Gallery and Studio, located in the Yahata ward, occupies a corner of the massive Nippon Steel complex that built Japan's industrial identity. The museum covers the history of the Yawata Steel Works and Japan's broader industrialisation from the Meiji period through the post-war economic miracle, using hands-on exhibits, historical photographs, and working demonstrations of industrial processes.
The collection documents how a government decision in 1901 to build a steel mill on this site rippled outward to create an entire city, reshape Japan's economy, and ultimately underpin the ships and weapons that fought World War Two. The post-war sections on Kitakyushu's environmental crisis — the city's waters and air were severely polluted by the 1960s — and the subsequent cleanup effort are a frank and useful exhibit on industrial history. The museum is part of the Yawata steel complex, which has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
