Matsumoto Seicho Memorial Museum

Tribute to the prolific Kitakyushu-born crime novelist

Matsumoto Seicho was one of postwar Japan's most prolific writers — a Kitakyushu local who turned out crime novels, history, and social commentary at a relentless pace until his death in 1992. The museum, opened in 1998 in the grounds of Kokura Castle, reconstructs his Tokyo study and library room by room, complete with his manuscripts, typewriters, and the orderly stacks of books that surrounded him.

The displays are mostly in Japanese, which limits the appeal for non-speakers, but the recreated rooms — full of personal effects — are atmospheric even without context. Seicho's social-realist mysteries like Points and Lines and Inspector Imanishi Investigates are widely translated and worth tracking down before a visit.
