Aoshima Shrine sits on a small island just off the coast, reached by a footbridge from the beach. The shrine is dedicated to deities linked with marriage, but the setting is the larger draw: palms, sea wind, red shrine buildings, and tilted rock layers around the island.
Those rock shelves are known as the Devil's Washboard. At low tide they make Aoshima feel half sacred site, half geological theatre, and they are the reason to time the visit with a little patience rather than rush through.
