Mojiko Station

Mojiko Station is the western terminus of the Kagoshima Main Line and the obvious starting point for any visit to Moji. The 1914 wooden station building, modelled on French neo-Renaissance railway design, is unlike anything else in Japan — a long symmetrical timber facade with white stucco trim and a clock tower in the centre. The interior preserves the original waiting hall, ticket office, and a small upstairs museum room.

It is still a working station with services every few minutes to Kokura, the main hub of Kitakyushu. Take the time to walk around the back of the building — the working platforms behind the historic facade are visible from a small viewing area.

A story
Mojiko Station was built in 1914 in the French Renaissance style — at the time, the gateway through which goods and passengers entered Kyushu from Honshu. In 1988 it became the first railway station in Japan designated as an Important Cultural Property. A long restoration project completed in 2019 returned the building to its original wooden appearance, including the copper-clad clock turret.
