Udo Jingu

Vermilion shrine built inside a sea cave on the Nichinan Coast.

Udo Jingu is one of southern Kyushu's most memorable shrines. The main sanctuary sits inside a cave in the cliff, with waves below and bright vermilion railings against the rock.

The shrine is tied to myths around Ugayafukiaezu, the father of Emperor Jimmu. Travellers also come to throw small clay balls toward a hollow in the rocks below; landing one is said to bring good luck.
