Nichinan stretches along the southern Miyazaki coast, where dark Pacific water, steep green slopes, and shrine mythology meet old castle-town Japan. It is spread out, so a car helps, but the rewards are stronger than the town's low-key profile suggests.
The headline is Udo Jingu, a vermilion shrine set inside a sea cave above the surf. Inland, Obi Castle Town preserves stone walls, samurai houses, and narrow lanes from a castle town ruled for centuries by the Ito clan.
Nichinan also has its stranger side at Sun Messe Nichinan, where Moai replicas stand over the ocean. Combined with the Nichinan Coast drive, the city makes a satisfying day south of Miyazaki rather than just another name on the railway map.
