Mifuneyama Rakuen

Large Edo-period garden below Mount Mifune, famous for azaleas and seasonal light events.

Mifuneyama Rakuen is Takeo's strongest sight. The garden spreads below the bare face of Mount Mifune, using ponds, paths, maples, and flowering shrubs to turn the mountain into scenery.

Spring azaleas are the classic draw, autumn colours are excellent, and the evening light installations have made the garden better known outside Saga. Even without a seasonal peak, it is the place in Takeo most worth building a day around.

A story
Nabeshima Shigeyoshi, the local lord, had Mifuneyama Rakuen laid out in 1845 as a strolling garden. Its scale makes sense only when you see the raw cliff of Mount Mifune acting as the backdrop.
