Takeo Onsen

Historic hot spring quarter with public baths near Takeo Onsen Station.

Takeo Onsen is the town's old heart. The public baths sit close to the station, making this one of the easier traditional hot-spring stops to add to a rail trip across northern Kyushu.

The water is only part of the appeal. The historic gate and bathhouse frontage give the area a sense of occasion before you even step inside.

A story
Takeo's hot springs are traditionally said to have been used for well over a thousand years. The red-lacquered Romon gate at the bath entrance was designed by Tatsuno Kingo, the architect best known for Tokyo Station.
