Anbo

Anbo is the second largest settlement on Yakushima, on the east coast roughly opposite Miyanoura. It was formerly the centre of the island's forestry industry — before the UNESCO designation, much of Yakushima's ancient cedar was logged, and Anbo was the administrative hub of that trade. The Yakusugi Museum here commemorates both the forest and the logging era, with exhibits on the ancient trees and the complex history of their exploitation.

The museum has an excellent collection of cross-sections from fallen yakusugi trees, some showing rings that go back over a thousand years. It also covers the traditional practice of collecting naturally felled cedar — called "debris wood" or "robosugi" — which continued legally even after logging was banned. Anbo itself is a working town without much tourism infrastructure beyond the museum, but it sits at the mouth of a river that offers good opportunities for kayaking through the lower forest reaches.
