Senpiro Falls drops about 60 metres over a broad granite face in the eastern part of Yakushima, with the white water fanning out across the rock rather than falling in a single column. The falls are visible from the road, making them the most accessible major waterfall on the island — most visitors park roadside and walk a few minutes to the viewpoint. When the river is in full spate after rain, the spectacle is considerable.
The surrounding forest here is somewhat less dense than in the western interior, and the east coast road passes through farmland and small settlements that show the lived-in side of island life alongside the wilderness scenery. Senpiro is usually visited as part of a coastal circuit, combined with a stop at nearby Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen — a tidal hot spring that emerges from rocks on the beach and is only accessible at low tide.
