Barasu Island

A bright white scrap of broken coral sitting just above sea level off Hatoma, reachable only by boat. Outfitters in Uehara run half-day snorkel and dive trips to Barasu — usually combined with a stop at the smaller Hatoma island.

The reef around Barasu is exceptional: clear water, healthy hard corals, and a good chance of seeing turtles. The islet itself is treeless and exposed; bring sun protection and water.

A story
Barasu is not really an island at all but a constantly shifting heap of broken coral about 1 km off Iriomote's north coast. It is one of the few places in Japanese waters where you can step onto land that is made entirely of coral fragments — the islet visibly changes shape from one season to the next.
