Pinaisara is the highest waterfall in Okinawa and the centrepiece of a popular day tour: kayak up the Hinai River through mangroves, then climb a short, steep jungle trail to the top of the falls. The view from the lip — out over the river valley and the East China Sea — is one of the best in the Yaeyamas.
A separate, longer trail leads to the base of the falls for a swim in the pool below. Most travellers go with a guide; it is theoretically possible to do it independently but the trail head is poorly signed, the bay is tidal, and the climb is genuinely steep.
