A small covered wooden bridge over the Kongō River on the main approach to Konpira-san, built in 1869 in a style unusual in this part of Japan. The roof is tile-covered and overhanging; the structure is supported by stone pillars and forms a small dim tunnel about thirty metres long. The bridge sits at the edge of the old shrine town, just before the first torii gate of the climb.
Easy to miss, but worth pausing at on the way up the hill — both as a piece of architecture and as a sample of the kind of detail the pilgrimage route is full of. Crossing is free; the bridge is always open.
