Taga-jinja is a Shinto fertility shrine whose grounds are filled with stone and wooden phallic carvings in an extraordinary variety of shapes and sizes, donated by worshippers over many generations. The carvings range from the modest to the enormous, and the overall effect is somewhere between folk art and surrealism. The shrine itself is a working religious site.
Attached to the shrine is a three-storey museum of erotica covering fertility symbols, sexual customs, and erotic art from Japan and around the world. The collection is genuinely eclectic and seriously assembled. It is not the sort of place you expect to find in a small Japanese city, which is part of what makes it worth visiting. Entry is charged separately from the shrine grounds.
