Shiroishi Castle is the town's natural starting point. The current keep is a reconstruction, but it restores the shape of a castle town long tied to the Katakura clan, retainers of the Date family.
Come in spring if you can. The castle and surrounding park are modest by Japanese castle standards, but cherry blossoms give the site the lift it needs.
