Shiroishi

Miyagi castle town with samurai traces, kokeshi craft, foxes, and quick shinkansen access.

Asia > Japan > Honshu > Shiroishi

Shiroishi is a small castle town in southern Miyagi, close enough to Sendai for an easy side trip and on the Tohoku Shinkansen for anyone moving north. Its appeal is compact but real: a reconstructed castle, old samurai traces, a local noodle tradition, kokeshi dolls, and the much stranger draw of Miyagi Zao Fox Village in the hills.

The town itself is calm and low-key. Shiroishi Castle gives the centre its shape, while the craft and fox-village stops pull you outward. In cherry-blossom season the castle park is at its best.

Shiroishi is not a substitute for Sendai or Matsushima. It is a good spare day if you want a smaller Tohoku stop with enough identity to justify leaving the cafe.
