Uesugi Shrine stands in Matsugasaki Park, where Yonezawa Castle once anchored the domain. It is dedicated to Uesugi Kenshin, one of the great daimyo of the Warring States period, whose remains were moved here after the Uesugi clan was transferred to Yonezawa.
The shrine is compact but full of clan symbolism, from dragon banners to references to Bishamonten, the war god Kenshin revered. Visit it together with the castle moats and museum rather than treating it as a quick isolated stop.
