Yonezawa

Yamagata castle town tied to the Uesugi clan, samurai history, sake, and beef.

Yonezawa is a small castle town in southern Yamagata Prefecture, tucked into the mountains of Tohoku. It is best known for the Uesugi clan, whose shrines, graves, and museum give the town more historical weight than its quiet streets first suggest.

The centre is spread out, with the station a little away from the old core, so Yonezawa rewards a slow day rather than a quick dash. Matsugasaki Park holds the remains of Yonezawa Castle and Uesugi Shrine, while the old sake brewery at Toko gives the town a different kind of tradition.

Food is part of the draw. Yonezawa beef is one of Japan's named wagyu brands, and the local ramen has a light, curly-noodle style that fits the snowy inland climate. It is not a headline stop like Sendai or Aizu-Wakamatsu, but it is a good northern Honshu detour for travellers who like their history close to the ground.
