Yonezawa Castle no longer has its keep, but the moats, earthworks, and park layout still show where power sat in the old domain. The site passed from the Nagai to the Date clan, and Date Masamune was born here before the Uesugi made it their stronghold.
Today the ruins are folded into Matsugasaki Park around Uesugi Shrine. In spring, the cherry blossoms soften what is otherwise a sparse but historically loaded place.
