The Akata Giant Buddha sits at Chokoku-ji Temple, south of Ouchi, and gives Yurihonjo a simple but memorable cultural stop away from the coast. It is not a vast temple complex; the draw is the scale of the statue and the quiet rural setting around it.
It works best as part of a drive between Honjo, Ouchi, and the Chokai foothills rather than as a stand-alone destination.
