Yurihonjo

Akita coastal city spread between Honjo, Mount Chokai, waterfalls, and rural shrines.

Yurihonjo is not a compact city so much as a large piece of southern Akita stitched together from former towns. Honjo, near the Sea of Japan, is the practical centre; inland districts climb toward the Chokai highlands, where waterfalls, snow country, shrines, and mountain roads take over.

That spread is both the challenge and the appeal. A traveller without a car will find the city awkward, but with wheels Yurihonjo becomes a good base for the Akita side of Mount Chokai. The landscape moves quickly from rice fields and low coastal hills to forested ravines and snowbound uplands.

The best day combines one cultural stop near Honjo or Ouchi with a longer push into Chokai: Hottai Falls, the Haraikawa trailhead on Mount Chokai, or a winter snow-country drive. It is a quiet, local kind of Tohoku rather than a polished sightseeing circuit.
