Mount Chokai is the great landmark of southern Akita and northern Yamagata, rising above the Sea of Japan with a long snow season and a proper alpine feel. From Yurihonjo, the Haraikawa side gives access to a serious day hike when the road and trails are open.
This is not a casual town walk. Weather can change quickly, snow lingers, and the summit day is long, but the reward is one of Tohoku's most handsome independent mountains.
