Tell Mar Elias

Tell Mar Elias, about 8 kilometres north-west of Anjara on the way toward Ajlun, is the traditional birthplace of the prophet Elijah and one of the other five Vatican-designated pilgrimage sites in Jordan. The hilltop, with sweeping views over the Jordan Valley, holds the ruins of two adjoining Byzantine basilicas dating from the sixth and seventh centuries, with mosaic floors still partly intact.

The site is unfenced and free to visit. It's most atmospheric at sunset, when the low light brings out the texture in the carved stone and the colours of the mosaics. The drive up from Anjara takes about fifteen minutes; the last stretch is narrow and steep but paved.
